Four Point Grading

Please comment on the four-point grading system we have been using this semester. In particular, let me know what you think of the following:

  • Do the grades give you a clear picture of your achievement in the class?

  • Do the grades of "Advanced," "Proficient," "Just Okay," and "Needs Work" put more emphasis on the quality of your work?

  • Do these grades make it harder to determine your overall grade in the class?

  • What other comments do you have about this grading system?

The four point grading scale makes it difficult to determine you’re overall grade. It is very hard to get a 4 on an assignment so it’s very hard to earn an A for this class. I don’t like how you can only get an A, B, or C as a grade on an assignment. Even if our work is good, you could have a little thing wrong and get “proficient” so you would get a B on something that is good quality. I think if you used a normal grading scale I could earn a better overall grade in this class. Also the four point grading system doesn’t really explain what you did wrong or what you need to work on. Also you cannot tell what you have to do better in this class to earn a good overall grade.

The four point grading system is difficult to understand. I think that if it were a normal grading system I would be doing better in this class. I think it is very hard to get advanced in this class and I think that some proficients are very good and should be worth an A. I like knowing my exact percentage in the class and the exact amount of points I receive. The four point grading system leaves everything kind of vague. Using this system you don’t know how far away you are from receiving an A. Overall I think this grading system is unclear.

I personally enjoy this grading scale. Its easy understand and there’s not much room for confusion. Sometimes I’m confused on why I got this grade but with the rubrics on how to do it attached to it and the things that I did highlighted it makes it pretty easy to understand what I didn’t do or what I did wrong. I wish all teachers had this grading scale because its easy to understand and it would be easier for teachers to grade and I think it would be easier for students to get there grades up if they didn’t start off well.

The four point grading system is very new to me. It has a lot of pro’s, and cons but in the overall picture I like it in this class. It gives a clear description of how I did and it helps me to understand what I did wrong. It also is really good how a whole bunch of things work together to get your grade. So if I don’t completely understand how to do something on an essay, it can even out with everything else. But in other subjects that kind of a thing could break you very quickly. It does make it kind of difficult to work out your grade, but I think it’s worth the trouble.

I see the four point grading system as a very good system for grading but it does have its flaws. When I get a grade back it make a very clear pic of my achievements in this class because it tells me if im advanced, proficient, okay or needs work. yes advanced, proficient, okay or needs work put an emphasis on the quality of my work because it gives me a word to base my work on. yes the grades 1,2,3 and 4 make it harder to determine my overall grade because I see 1 as 25%, 2 as 50%, 3 as 75%, and 4 as 100% and that not the real gradeing syatem. This is i very good way to grade people in a class.

I think the four-point grading system doesn’t really give me a clear picture on my achievements in class but it does out more emphasis on the quality of my work and makes me want to try harder. This grading system is pretty confusing because of the way the points and percentages are matched up, I don’t know what 4, 3, 2, or 1's percentages are so I really only know that 4 is an A, 3 is a B, 2 is a C, and a 1 is a D. To me this grading system isn’t the best way to grade work just based and a four-point scale and by making an essay out of 50 points or how ever many points you want to make it out of it will differ up the grade students receive and could raise their grade but could also make their grade decline. All in all, I think the four-point grading system is not very good because it doesn’t really have a huge ratio on what grade you can get.

The four point grading system gives me a fairly clear picture of my achievement in the class. Though at times the grades dont seem flexible enough, the are fairly straight forward with only a 1, 2, 3, or a 4, with no leniency. at times that could be a problem, however it is usually not. Overall, it is a decent grading system in my professional opinion.

Mr. Sale, i think that your 4 point grading system is a great way of showing me how my good my work is. I also think that it has pushed me to do better, i mean that getting a four is deficult and when you finally get one it feels really good, which causes me to try harder just to get that 4. I dont think that this grading scale makes it harder for me to determine my grade in this class, because the majority of the work i get back is a 3 or so, which means i am proficient. My advice, keep using this grading scale, i think its better than a normal grading scale.

The four point grading system is a grading system that I have never seen before. Most teachers don’t have a unique grading system they use the normal one. I think I prefer yours because it is easier to pass and harder to get an A. It gives me a fairly clear picture of what my grade should be. I think that I could do better in this class if I would do more work and do it better. It is annoying how on the computer my grade looks like a C, but the grade is actually an A.

At the beginning of the year when this grading system was first introduced to me I was a little skeptic about it, because I was worried about my GPA. But since we have been using the system I have realized that I have been pushing my self harder to get the fours, which increases my learning and work effort.
I find it is helpful see to “Advanced”, “Proficient”, “Just Okay” and so on, because it establishes how good or bad the assignment was, unlike A, B, and C. Although it is sometimes hard to estimate your overall grade, I do understand that if you have improved consistently, you will get that improving grade. I am still a little worried about my overall GPA, because even though “Proficient” is average and decent it is still a B in the grading book. But I guess in the overall picture this grading system does help me push myself to be better and to work harder, therefore allowing me to learn.

I really do not like this grading system. By only allowing us to either have and A or a B or a C. Even though we may deserve an A- we get a “proficient”. So I do not think it puts good emphasis on the quality of work. If my parents see a 3 in the grading they do not see that it was closer to a 4 or closer to a 2. I also think it’s almost impossible to get a 4. I usually get A’s in English class but not I only have a B because of this grading system and you can’t wait the grades. The thing this grading system does show however, is how or if we improve our writing. If you look down the list and you see 2, 3,3,4,4 then you see that over the weeks you have improved your grade and how you write. I don’t think it’s fair for you to grade the way discuss, I do think you should grade if we participate at all, but sometimes the really good ideas you have are already said and then you have nothing really important to bring to the discussion. So when my parents look at my grade they see an 85 and in their eyes they see “a B” that I could do better and they know that I usually get A’s in English class. I think that I have worked much harder then to just have a B. And my parents just don’t get it. This grading system isn’t all bad but I would prefer another way to grade my papers.

The grading system that we have been using all semester has helped me with the quality of the work that I turn in for this class. I don't necessarily care about whether or not I have and A or a B in here, but rather if my work is proficient or advanced. In a way though I also like the traditional grading scale but I think this one is more effective.

The grading system in this class is unique. In some ways I like it and others I don't. I think it is a good way on feedback wise with the words like advanced, proficient, just okay, and needs work. It helps me develop my work and make it better once I get some feedback. I don't like how the grading system looks on infinite campus because almost every time my parents check my grade I have to explain to them why it looks different and so forth. It is also very confusing and unclear about your overall grade. I don’t really like how this particular scale is. Overall, I would not recommend to use this scale next year because of the unclearness that it has.

I find the grading system to be efficient in some ways, but hard to really understand in other ways. The reason why I like the four-point grading scale is because it is directly to the point and puts more emphasis on exactly how good or bad you think our work is. Even though the grading scale is effective in that sense, I think that it makes it much harder to determine the overall grade as a whole. The reason why I think this is because when you grade our work, there are only four different grades that we can get. I dislike that because you can’t necessarily ever get a grade that specifically applies to you and the real quality of your own work. Instead, it just ends up being exactly an A, B, C… etc. I think that a much better way to grade would be grading in a way where if you happen to miss something that’s not very significant, it shouldn’t affect your grade enough to end up getting a whole grade lower.

I think that the grading system is not very clear on the achievement and effort that I give to this class. My grade at an “85” percent and I think I have worked much harder to get a B in the class. When I do my homework at night and want to get the so called “advanced” grade, I put the extra effort and spend more time on it, but when I only get a proficient when I tried so hard to get an advanced it just tells me that there is not point in trying that hard for a B. When I see an “Advanced” I usually think of it as some reward because when I look around I see people with a “just okay” or a “proficient” and I am extremely happy. But when I put that extra effort in and get a “proficient” then I think of how it is just a normal B and that it will not help my grade. For the most part I like the grading system but when I am on the brim of an A paper and I make a grammatical error and it puts my grade to that B I do no think that is far.

The four point grading system gives me a clear picture of how I am doing on each assignment, but I can’t really determine my achievement in the class. I think the grades give more emphasis on the quality of my work because I can find out if I am doing fine or I need to put more work into my assignments. They do make it harder to determine the overall grade because it is a different grading system the infinite campus is, which makes my grade lower than it really is and confuses my parents. I do think the four point grading system is a good way to do grading, just a little hard to determine the overall grade.

I think the grades overall give a pretty clear picture of my achievement in the class. The 4, 3, 2, and 1 grades definitely put more emphasis on the quality of work; if you want to get a 4 you try to do everything a little better than what was required, and I know the quality of my work has definitely improved. Theses grades, though, definitely make it harder to determine your overall grade in the class. I like the fact that it focuses on how you improved/ how well you learned instead of what grade you got, but the gap between the 4, 3, 2, and 1 is pretty big. Another interesting thing is how a 3, an 85%, means proficient, that you did everything required. In all of my other classes, if you do everything required, that pretty much equals an A, but in this class, you really have to focus on the work you are doing and how you could make it better. (It’s kind of like what do I have to do to get an A vs. what do I need to improve on to get an A…) I guess the word to describe the system overall would be different.

I think that this grading scale is alright, however it is flawed as well. The four-point system allows us to address problems easily, without having to calculate a percentage. The reason that it is flawed is the inability to track missing assignments. Another reason that it is probably not the best scale to use is that parents may not understand how there are two categories worth 0%, while there is one category that is worth 100%, which is manually entered. All in all, the grading scale is fine, but lacks the ability to track individual assignments easily.

I think that this four-point scale grading system is a very nice change in comparison to other classes, and I understand it well. It seems that it gives you a direct sense of how you on assignments overall. However, it seems to make it harder to tell what your actuall grade is, because it’s on a different scale than we are used to.

I personally dont mind the four point gradeing system other than it is not clear on weather or not you got a b+ or a A-. It is hard to tell why you got a 3 and not a 4. It seems like if one thing is wrong in your whole paper then you get a 3 and it is not possible to get a 4. But other than that the 4 point gradeing system is not that bad.
